Rai Dress

400 / PER DAY:
The Rai community, a prominent indigenous group of the Kirat confederation in Nepal, boasts a vibrant and culturally significant traditional dress. Their attire is not just clothing but a symbol of their identity, ancestral pride, spiritual beliefs, and connection to nature. While there are common elements, variations may exist among the different Rai sub-groups (e.g., Khambu, Limbu, Yakkha, Sunuwar, and other Kirat groups with whom they share cultural similarities). For Women: Rai women's dress is characterized by its colorful fabrics, intricate patterns, and unique jewelry. Phariya (फरिया) / Lungi (लुंगी): This is the main lower garment, a wrap-around skirt. It's often made from hand-woven cotton or silk, and can be in deep hues like black, red, blue, or maroon. Some phariyas may feature polka dot patterns or floral designs woven into the fabric. The phariya is usually pleated and wrapped around the waist. Chaubandi Cholo (चौबन्दी चोलो) / Blouse: A fitted, four-tied blouse worn on the upper body. These blouses are typically made from vibrant fabrics, often Dhaka (a traditional hand-woven fabric with geometric patterns), velvet, or other cotton blends. They are frequently adorned with intricate embroidery, especially around the neckline and sleeves, showcasing the rich craftsmanship of the Rai people. Patuka (पटुकी): A broad and long piece of cloth, often white or brightly colored, wrapped tightly around the waist over the phariya. It helps secure the skirt and offers support. Pachyaura (पछ्यौरी) / Shawl: A shawl or scarf is often draped over the shoulders or head, adding elegance and warmth to the ensemble. These can be plain or feature simple, symbolic patterns. Dhajura (धजुरा): A vibrant ceremonial adornment that is often part of the complete Rai female outfit, symbolizing celebration. Traditional Jewelry for Women: Rai women are known for their distinctive and often elaborate traditional gold, silver, and beaded ornaments, which hold deep cultural and spiritual meanings. Sirful (सिरफूल): A floral-shaped headpiece worn on the head, often straight as a sign of respect. Sirbandi (सिरबन्दी): An ornament worn on the forehead. Yarling (यार्लिंग) / Dhungri (ढुंग्री): Large, circular, or intricately designed earrings worn on the ears. Bulaki (बुलाकी) / Jhumke Bulaki (झुम्के बुलाकी): Nose rings, often large and ornamental, worn on the septum or nostril. Kantha Mala (कण्ठमाला) / Hamel (हमेल): Various types of necklaces, often made of gold or silver, or incorporating beads. Hamel can be a coins necklace. Pote (पोते): Beaded necklaces, often in yellow or green, worn in multiple strands. Paisa Mala (पैसा माला): A necklace made of old silver coins. Khurmi Khurpeto: Ornaments sometimes tied on the Patuka. Kalli (कल्ली): Silver anklets.
