Chhetri Dress

400 / PER DAY:
The Chhetri community, one of the largest and most influential ethnic groups in Nepal, has a traditional dress that is closely aligned with the national dress of Nepal, reflecting their historical prominence and role in shaping Nepali identity. It's important to note that while there are general styles, variations can exist based on region within Nepal and individual family traditions. For Men: The Daura Suruwal (राष्ट्रिय पोशाक) The Daura Suruwal is considered the national dress of Nepal and is widely worn by Chhetri men, particularly for formal occasions, festivals, and cultural events. Daura: This is the upper garment, a double-breasted shirt that typically has eight ties ("Aath Gau"), which are said to symbolize different virtues or parts of the body, and it's believed that the eight ties hold the nine gates of the body, preventing evil. The Daura is designed to be comfortable and allow for movement. It often has side slits. Suruwal: These are loose-fitting trousers that are tight at the ankles. They are designed for comfort and flexibility. Waiscoat or Jacket: A waistcoat (often a Dhaka ko Bhotto or a general waistcoat) or a European-style coat is commonly worn over the Daura, especially for more formal settings. This practice became more widespread after Prime Minister Jang Bahadur Rana was gifted a jacket by the Queen of England, leading to its adoption in formal attire. Topi: The Dhaka Topi (a cap made from Dhaka cloth, a traditional hand-woven fabric with intricate patterns) or Bhadgaunle Topi (a black cap from Bhaktapur) is an essential accessory, completing the traditional male attire. The Dhaka Topi is particularly iconic and a symbol of Nepali identity. Patuka: A long, thick piece of cloth wrapped around the waist as a belt, providing support and completing the traditional look. For Women: The Gunyo Cholo (गुन्यू चोलो) and Sari Chhetri women often wear the Gunyo Cholo, which is also a significant dress in Nepali culture, particularly for young girls transitioning into womanhood. As adults, the sari is a very common and widely accepted traditional dress for Chhetri women. Gunyo: This refers to a long, pleated skirt, similar to a sari but typically worn in a specific style with many pleats gathered at the front. Cholo: A fitted blouse worn with the gunyo or sari. It can be full-sleeved or half-sleeved. Fariya: This term is often used interchangeably with "sari" in some contexts or refers to a traditional wrap-around skirt. Pachyaura/Shawl: A shawl is often draped over the shoulders to complete the outfit. Jewelry: Chhetri women, like many Nepali women, adorn themselves with various traditional gold ornaments, which may include: Sirbandi/Sirful: Head ornaments. Kantha/Tilahari: Necklaces. Bulaki: Nose rings. Kalli: Anklets. Various earrings and bangles. It's worth noting that while some ornaments are common across communities, specific designs or the emphasis on certain pieces might vary regionally.
